One Nation Under the Goddess

You have to admire the Supreme Court for taking the no-win "Pledge of Allegiance" case. The phrase "under God," inserted into the pledge in the 1950s, promotes a specific religious viewpoint, a clear-cut violation of the Constitution. Yet polls show that there will be a public uproar if that brief acknowledgement of the divine is removed from the daily routine of millions of school children. Should the justices leave it in and somehow fudge the law to make it fit, or should they take it out and face the backlash? Actually, there's a third choice, as we explain in the Zong of the Week.

The chief justice said, I fear
The law in this case is all too clear
The government can't promote one religion
And leave aside any other religion
Our founding fathers put it in the constitution
To stop religious persecution
That means "One nation under God" is a crime
Unless all divine beings get equal time

We've said "under God" for fifty years
And that puts us deeply in arrears
As a first step towards being honest
We'll have fifty years under the Goddess

One nation under the Goddess

But we can't stop there. For fifty years more
We'll be "One nation under Thor"
And if we're not wiped out by some big crisis
Fifty years of "under Isis"
Then in 2154 we'll follow with
"One nation under Allah"
And in 2204 we'll switch to
"One nation under Vishnu"

With liberty and justice for all of us

So as the centuries advance
Each deity will have its chance
And may our nation still exist
When we've gone through the entire list
That may not be before
A.D. 5304
But starting tomorrow, remember, the word is
"One nation under the Goddess"
